Inflating a set of cat lungs

Lungs are by most accounts mundane. Everybody has them, few give it much thought. But sequestered within darkness of the chest cavity, enveloping the fluttering heart, there’s an incredible wonder to this oddly inflatable organ.

Dissection is a destructive process. Rudely excised from membranous mooring and nourishing vessels, the deflated lungs appear little more than bloodied meat; amorphous and exposed…….until a breath of air unfurls its secret glory.

Here, a set of cat lungs is inflated with a straw. Comprised of hundreds of millions of microscopic air sacks called alveoli, mammalian lungs harbor air capacity that is difficult to believe unless seen. The color of the entire organ lightens into a soft pink, as each microscopic sac fills with air.

A debt of gratitude is owed to cyborgraptor for her assistance in creating these gifs, as well as the students that helped me film this demo.

Kids, don’t try this at home, OK?

A reading nook incorporated into the library is a very charming idea, especially when you have a large window with a glorious view. Surrounded by tall shelves, filled with books, instantly induces a sense of coziness. But grand window or not, this idea is a great one for making use of a narrow space, that otherwise might be wasted due to its awkward size. So if you have a small narrow space you don’t know what to do with, consider setting up a cozy bench (preferably with storage capabilities) and keeping it company with some tall bookshelf companions.

The human central processing unit, slice by slice.

In 2009, Susannah Cahalan woke up one day in a hospital, strapped to her bed, unable to move or speak. Only weeks before, she had been a healthy 24-year-old, starting her career as a reporter at The New York Post.

On today’s show, she talks about the rare immune disease that was attacking her brain and her descent into increasingly psychotic behavior and eventually catatonia. She’s written a new memoir called “Brain on Fire.”

(Note: These images are not of Susannah Cahalan’s brain.)

By using unwanted books discarded from public libraries, Spanish art collective Luzinterruptus creates intimate public spaces that encourage reading. Their most recent installation in Melbourne aimed to take control of the public space “in which the traffic withdrew, yielding ground to the modest power of the written word.” The dimly lit books began overflowing in the streets, stealing space amongst the dense traffic. On the closing night of the installation, the books were offered up to the visiting pedestrians, each allowed to choose their favorite books out of the thousands presented to them.

This is so cool.

Milan based painter Valerio Carrubba is an extreme hyperrealism painter. The paintings are Dali inspired, tho he has some pure beauty work that are already in some big collectors homes. Some of his works are painted twice; one brushstroke lying on top of the other. This double painting emphasizes the colors and repeats the form in order not to describe them but almost to deny them. His work is Absolutely stunning and disturbing.
